ECT presents East of Berlin
ESSENTIAL COLLECTIVE THEATRE - EAST OF BERLIN
BY HANNAH MOSCOVITCH
ROBERTSON THEATRE

Vergangenheitsbewältigung is a German word describing the attempt to analyze, digest and learn to live with the past, in particular the Holocaust - "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it".

The pressing need to learn from the atrocities of history on this, the 75th anniversary of D-Day is painfully apparent in Essential Collective Theatre’s production of Canadian playwright Hannah Moscoviwich’s East of Berlin.
Raising questions about the culpability of those responsible for horrific crimes against humanity, the play also illustrates the effects on future generations and reminds us of how our complacency and silence can condemn us to repeat our capacity for cruelty.

About the Play:
As a teenager, Rudi discovers that his father was a doctor at Auschwitz. Questioning redemption, love, guilt and the sins of the father, East of Berlin follows Rudi's emotional upheaval as he comes to terms with a frightening past that was never his own.
